The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has confirmed the visit that his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, will make to the United States.

Trump made the comments during his first cabinet meeting at the White House since his inauguration last month.

As he addressed the audience, Trump quickly returned to the minerals deal with Ukraine and said Zelensky "is coming on Friday, now it's confirmed."

"The United States needs rare earths and Ukraine has them, the deal will allow us to get our money back," he added, emphasizing at the same time that the deal "is also very good for Ukraine."

"We are going to sign an agreement, which will be a very big agreement," he says.

Trump says "taxpayers should not foot the bill" for the money the US has given Ukraine since Russia's invasion, a figure he has claimed is $350 billion, but some international bodies such as the Kiel Institute for the World Economy estimate the figure to be around $120 billion.

"Most importantly, by now, we will make a deal with Russia and Ukraine to stop the killing of people," Trump said.

What are the rare minerals that the US is looking for in Ukraine?

Rare earths or elements are 17 elements of the periodic table that have a market worth $11 billion.

By 2031, the value is expected to increase to $21.7 billion, with an annual growth rate of 7.4%.

They are essential chemical elements in the technology and defense industries, increasingly strategic sectors.

In recent days, the agreement between the US and Ukraine to end the war has put rare earths in the spotlight, a deal worth $500 billion to end the conflict.

Their reserves are around 2.6 billion tons, but also other materials necessary for technology such as graphite, where Ukraine has 20% of all global reserves, or even lithium.

These are among the treasures of Ukraine's subsoil, and the reasons why they are increasingly important in the confrontations between Russia and the US over the exploitation of mineral resources, especially in the Donbas area.

This agreement would free Washington from dependence on China, from which the US imported more than 95% of the rare earth minerals consumed from 2019-2022.

China is the world's largest producer, covering 70% of the total, with 240 thousand tons of production per year, while the US in 2024 reached only 43 thousand tons, leaving behind Australia, Thailand, Russia, India and Madagascar.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has about 20,000 mines, mainly coal and iron, but also other minerals among those mentioned, with an annual capacity of 2.6 billion tons.

Ukraine is also a leader in titanium production, with reserves located mainly in the Donbas, the area where the fighting is taking place and where Russian troops are stationed.

It is thought that at least $12.4 trillion is the total value of Ukraine's energy, metal and mineral reserves currently under Russian control.

While US reserves of rare earth minerals are 3.6 million tons, 14 million tons are located in Canada, another country in the attention of the US President.
