Trump wants the Panama Canal, President Mulino: It was not given to us by the United States, it belongs to my people!

Panama has hit back at US President Donald Trump's threats to take control of the Panama Canal, a major trade route.

"The Panama Canal was not a concession or a gift from the United States," Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino said on a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In his inaugural address, Trump said Panama had "broken" a promise to remain neutral, claiming that China was operating in the Panama Canal.

Trump also said that American ships are not being treated fairly.

The canal is one of the most important trade routes for the U.S. About 5% of global maritime trade passes through the 51-mile (82 km) Panama Canal.

Mulino says Trump's claims about the canal are false, adding that it belongs to the people of Panama.
