US President-elect Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday to discuss the war in Ukraine.

According to sources for the Washington Post, Trump has "advised" Putin not to escalate the conflict and reminded him of the "significant US military presence in Europe".

The pair also discussed the goal of peace on the European continent, as well as the prospect of further phone calls soon to discuss "a quick resolution to the war in Ukraine."

During the phone call, the pair also discussed the "territorial issue", but the sources did not provide further details.

The Washington Post says sources indicated that the Ukrainian government was informed of Putin's call, and did not object to the conversation taking place.

The Kremlin said Friday that Putin was willing to discuss Ukraine with Trump, but that did not mean he was willing to budge on Moscow's demands, namely that Ukraine give up its ambitions to join NATO. n and surrender the four territories currently held by Russia.
