Three US senators pressure Serbia: Sanction Putin

U.S. Senators Chris Murphy, Jeanne Shaheen and Tom Tillis called on Serbia to harmonize its foreign policy with that of the European Union, implying that Belgrade must join sanctions against Russia as soon as possible.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen said that at the meeting with Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vucic has also talked about imposing sanctions by Serbia on Russia.

"We talked about it and I'm sure we'll keep talking, I think we've put forward our positions," the senator said.

Senator Chris Murphy said they conveyed to Serbian President Kukes their goal of building a community of democratic countries that would condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"We understand the historical ties between Serbia and Russia. We continue to support Serbia on its way to EU membership and stand by the people of Serbia in this process. We came to Serbia to strengthen the good relations the country has with the United States," Murphy said.

Speaking of dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, which has stalled, as there are no high-level meetings since July 2021, Senator Murphy said he was deeply disappointed that there was no progress in that process.
