Donald Trump, his company and top executives have repeatedly lied about the former US President's wealth in annual financial statements, in schemes that include maneuvering for favorable credit terms and lower insurance premiums.

Judge Arthur Engoron reached this conclusion, according to which Trump committed fraud for years while building his real estate empire, which then catapulted him to fame and the White House.

The judge found that the former president and his company defrauded banks and insurance companies by massively overstating assets and exaggerating his net worth in documents used to make deals and secure financing.

"These tactics crossed the line and broke the law," the judge said, rejecting Trump's argument that a disclaimer on the financial statements absolved him of any wrongdoing.

"He claims that if property values have increased in the years since the financial statements were filed, then the numbers were not inflated at the time they were filed," Judge Engoron said of Trump's plea.

The judge's remarks came after a civil lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
She sued Trump in September of last year, accusing the former president and his company of lying for a decade about the values of assets, including his Mar-a-Lago mansion, the condo at the top of Trump Tower and other office buildings and golf courses.

According to the prosecutor, Trump's net worth was inflated from $2.23 billion to $3.6 billion in annual financial statements sent to banks and insurance companies.
The next trial in the case is expected to take place on October 2, but the saga of facing justice for Trump and his company regarding the illegal inflation of financial statements could last until December.
