The WikiLeaks  founder stands, along with his wife and children, among the people attending the funeral of Pope Francis.

In 2023, the Pope granted Assange's family a private audience at the Vatican while he himself was in prison.

This is his first public appearance since regaining his freedom in June last year, following a deal with US justice, where he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge: conspiracy to obtain and publish information about national security.

For this he was sentenced to just over five years in prison, which he had already served during his lengthy trial.

With this agreement, he avoided a criminal trial for espionage and disclosure of state secrets, where – according to his lawyers – he risked life imprisonment.

After being released from prison in London where he was awaiting extradition to the US, Assange returned to Australia, his native country, last summer.

Since then, he has not made any statements or appeared in public, which makes his participation in the Pope's funeral even more important and widely commented on.

He appeared in St. Peter's Square with long, white hair and beard, wearing a white shirt and a dark suit and tie.

At his side was his wife, Stella, dressed in black. She had been part of his legal team during the trial, and their two children, born while Assange was inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, in 2017 and 2019.

They married in 2022, when he was still in prison.

Ecuador had temporarily granted him political asylum to protect him from arrest by British authorities.

Assange, who is now 53, founded WikiLeaks in 2006, after a career as a hacker and investigative journalist.

In 2010, the site began publishing secret documents about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, obtained by US military analyst Chelsea Manning.

The documents revealed abuses committed by US forces, and were subsequently republished by The Guardian and many other international media outlets, for which Assange won several journalism awards.

Later, the US Department of Justice charged him with revealing state secrets, saying his publications had endangered national security and the lives of American soldiers and agents around the world.

Assange has also faced an investigation in Sweden over allegations of sexual assault against two women, but the case was closed due to the passage of time limits.

In 2016, WikiLeaks published tens of thousands of emails from Hillary Clinton's private account, from the period when she was Secretary of State.

For this reason, Assange was accused of colluding with Russia, with the aim of damaging Clinton's candidacy and favoring Republican candidate Donald Trump, who subsequently won the presidential election.

Pope Francis will be buried in the aisle of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, wearing a robe designed by Filippo Sorcinelli, the Italian designer and artist, tailor to the popes. But one particular detail has drawn attention to his funeral attire.

Pope Francis will be buried wearing the same simple, worn-in black shoes he has worn for years on all his public appearances.

A pair of modest, worn-out shoes, instead of the traditional papal slippers, a symbol of power. A final gesture in keeping with the discreet and humble style that has characterized the Pope.

The Pope also dared to forgo the grandeur of the Vatican's funeral, preferring the simplicity of room 201 in the Domus Santa Marta.

Francis has chosen a simple wooden coffin, filled with zinc, avoiding the use of the traditional three-part coffins usually used for Popes.
