A magical and seemingly unreal moment occurred in Vatican Square, as birds flew over St. Peter's in the early hours of the morning, reflecting hearts rising in farewell.

Thousands of believers stand in line, in silence and solemnity for hours, to bid their final farewell to Pope Francis.

The body of Pope Francis has been placed in St. Peter's Basilica for three days of public mourning, giving thousands of Catholics the opportunity to greet him one last time.

The basilica will remain open until midnight on Wednesday and Thursday, while public homages will conclude on Friday evening.
