Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly escaped an assassination attempt in Moscow, where he has been taking refuge with his family since December 8, 2024, when he fled the country and fled after an attack by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebels.

The information was posted on the Telegram channel “General SVR”, which is believed to be run by a former senior Russian agent. According to the channel’s sources, the assassination attempt on Assad took place on Sunday (December 29), when he was poisoned and experienced a critical condition.

Doctors called to his apartment managed to stabilize him. However, the news has not been confirmed by any official source.

The Sun reports that Assad sought immediate medical attention after, within seconds of being exposed to the suspected poisonous substance, he began coughing incessantly and had severe difficulty breathing.

The assassination attempt comes amid reports of family tensions. Reports indicate that his wife, Asma al-Assad, is seeking a divorce and is expressing a desire to move to London.
