Former lawmaker Matt Gaetz on Thursday withdrew his name from President-elect Donald Trump's nomination for attorney general, saying his confirmation process has become a distraction.

In a message on the X Network, Gaetz announced that he had great meetings the day before with senators and expressed appreciation for their thoughts and support.

Gaetz adds that it has become clear, however, that the confirmation was unfairly turned into a distraction for the vital work of the transition team for the incoming Trump-Vance administration.

Gaetz believes that no more time should be wasted and is therefore withdrawing his name from consideration for the post of attorney general, which in the United States has the functions of the minister of justice.

“There is no time to waste in unnecessary bickering in Washington, so I will withdraw my name to serve as Attorney General. Trump's Justice Department should be in place and ready from day one. I remain fully committed to Donald J. Trump being the most successful president in history," he declared.

Gaetz has been under investigation by the Justice Department in connection with allegations of sexual harassment involving a 17-year-old girl.

He has also been under scrutiny by the House Ethics Committee for other allegations, including sexual abuse, drug use and accepting inappropriate gifts.

On Wednesday night, the House Ethics Committee failed to agree on whether or not to release its investigative report on former lawmaker Gaetz.
