The explosion that occurred this morning at a refinery site of the Italian hydrocarbon company, "Eni", in Calenzano has left two dead, 26 injured and three people still missing.

The Prefecture of Florence has confirmed the figures, while the column of smoke is visible from the entire Florence region. In addition to the nine injured who were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, two of whom were in serious condition, another 17 people presented themselves to the hospital facilities to receive medical treatment, while three others remain missing.

"Firefighters have extinguished the flames to avoid spreading to nearby deposits. Technicians from our regional environmental protection agency are on site to assess the possible effects of the pollutants, including any effects on waterways. The explosion was also felt in towns far from where it happened," said the president of the Tuscany region, Eugenio Giani.

In the late afternoon, one of the victims was identified. He is Vincenzo Martinelli (51 years old). Martinelli was a tanker driver and lived in Prato.

Meanwhile, a witness told the media: "I heard a loud noise, like it was a bomb, a rocket, it broke all the doors, the windows, everything."

"I saw a terrifying scene, there is total destruction. I imagine whoever was there working and was near or under the charging infrastructure, it must have seemed like hell. The situation is indescribable," said Calenzano mayor Giuseppe Carovani after inspecting the area.

"In the yard outside the plant, there was an episode of a tanker fire a few years ago, but until yesterday, no incident of this type had occurred inside it," he added.
