NATO chief Mark Rutte warned Russia on Wednesday of a "devastating" response if it attacks Poland or any other member state of the alliance.

Rutte was speaking during a visit to the Polish capital, Warsaw. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said it was important to prepare for any possible outcome from talks between Russia and the United States that are focused on ending the three-year war in Ukraine, the AP reports.

NATO's 32 member states, especially those on its eastern flank, are deeply concerned that the talks could end in a deal that suits Russia. They fear the outcome will allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to rebuild his forces and threaten other countries in the region in the years to come.

Rutte said that no one dares to think that they can escape without consequences if they attack a NATO member state.

"If someone were to miscalculate and attack Poland or any other allied country, then they would face a strong reaction from the alliance. Our reaction would be devastating. This should be very clear to Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin or anyone else who wants to attack us," Rutte said.
