The United States is the only country in the world where weapons in the hands of civilians exceed the population, according to the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey (SAS).

It is also the only place where at least one episode of mass shooting occurs each year, CNN says citing the survey.

There are 120.5 guns for every 100 Americans, according to the report that considers these figures shocking, against the backdrop of the massacre at Robb Elementary School in Texas, where 21 people were killed, most of them children.

The Falkland Islands come after the U.S. with about 62 guns per 100 people, and war-weary Yemen holds third place for gun ownership with 53 such per 100 people. Meanwhile, in countries like South Korea and Japan, this rate is calculated at 0.2, so, close to zero, it is further underlined. The SAS survey estimates that Americans own 393 million of the 857 million civilian weapons available, a figure that corresponds to 46% of the world's total civilian weapons.

He also drew attention to the fact that regular mass shootings are "a predominantly American phenomenon."

The report transmitted by CNN notes that four out of every 100,000 people in the US were victims of gun violence in 2019, 18 times higher than the average rate in other developed countries.

The report concludes, citing a survey conducted in October 2020, that about 44% of American adults live in a home where there are guns, and about one-third own one.
