RECORD/ The Mexican Navy seizes 8.3 tons of drugs, worth 134.5 million euros

On Friday, October 18, the Mexican Navy confiscated 8.3 tons of drugs in the Pacific Ocean, a record amount for drugs seized at sea.

"The value of the confiscated drugs amounts to 134.5 million euros," the Navy said in a statement, without specifying the type of narcotics.

"This is the largest amount of drugs that has been seized during a maritime operation, there is no similar precedent", the statement further states.

The drug seizure was made southwest of the city of Lazaro Cardenas, in the state of Michoacán, located on the west coast of Mexico.

During the operation, the Navy stopped six boats, five with outboard motors and a semi-submersible about 15 meters long, and arrested 23 people, reports A2.

For decades, Mexico has been a hub for drug smuggling into North America, an activity that a number of cartels have struggled to control.

The state of Michoacan, on whose shores the seizure took place, is the scene of ongoing conflicts between criminal gangs, among them the powerful "New Generation" cartel of Jalisco.
