Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has said that Ukraine must cede territory to Russia in order for the war to end.

Kissinger made the statement during a speech at the Davos Economic Forum on Monday.

Kissinger urged the United States and the West not to seek an embarrassing loss to Russia in Ukraine, warning that it could worsen Europe's long-term stability.

He urged the West to force Ukraine to accept negotiations with a "status quo ante".

"Negotiations must begin in the next two months before creating unrest and tensions that will not be easily overcome. "Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante," Kissinger said.

The "status quo ante" mentioned by Kissinger refers to the restoration of the pre-war situation in which Russia formally controlled Crimea and informally the two easternmost regions of Ukraine, Luhansk and Donetsk.

The former US secretary of state also urged the US government to avoid conflicts with China over Taiwan. "Direct confrontation (US and China) over Taiwan should be avoided," Kissinger said.

"The United States and China need to reach an agreement in the coming years on how to build a long-term relationship," he added. "At the core of the negotiations, it is important that the United States and China discuss principles that do not provoke rivalry, in order to create space for cooperation. "It's important for world peace that the United States and China can soften their rivalry."

Biden confirmed yesterday from Tokyo that the United States would militarily defend Taiwan if Beijing invades the island. China responded by urging the US president not to "underestimate his strong determination" to "defend its sovereignty".
