The Conservative People's Party in Jumilla voted to ban the use of civic centers and gyms for activities "foreign to our identity".
A local authority in southeastern Spain has banned Muslims from using public facilities such as civic centres and gyms to celebrate the religious holidays of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Fitr.
The ban in Jumilla, in Murcia, is the first in Spain. It was introduced by the Conservative People's Party (PP) and approved with the abstention of the far-right Vox party and the opposition of local left-wing parties, reports The Guardian.
The proposal states that "municipal sports facilities may not be used for religious, cultural or social activities foreign to our identity, unless they are organized by the local authority."
The local Vox party posted on X: "Thanks to Vox, the first measure to ban Islamic holidays in Spain's public spaces has been adopted. Spain is and will forever be the country of Christian people."
