Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested Moscow as a venue for a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, according to two sources familiar with the call between Donald Trump and the Russian president. “Putin mentioned Moscow” during their call on Monday, one of the sources told AFP, adding that Zelensky replied “no.”

Geneva, a possible option for the summit

Meanwhile, Geneva is increasingly being mentioned as an alternative to this meeting.

French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed holding the summit in a “neutral location,” with Switzerland, and more specifically Geneva, at the top of the list. Macron, after his visit to the White House, told French media that “this is not just a hypothesis, but the collective will of the leaders.”

Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis confirmed this option, expressing Switzerland's readiness to host the meeting. He stressed the importance of Geneva's special role as the European headquarters of the United Nations, adding that Switzerland is grateful for the trust placed in it.

However, hosting the meeting in Switzerland poses significant legal challenges. As a signatory to the Treaty of Rome, Switzerland would be obligated to arrest Putin, who is currently indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court.

But Cassis emphasizes that, considering the special role of Switzerland and the status of Geneva, there is the possibility of a flexibility that could provide temporary immunity for Putin during this meeting, to facilitate the development of the talks.

"We can do this despite the arrest warrant against Putin because of our special role and the role of Geneva as the European headquarters of the United Nations," the Swiss minister said in a statement to the media.

The world's attention is focused on the final decision on the venue for the summit, which could mark an important step towards resolving the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

Holding such a meeting in a neutral location like Geneva will be not only symbolic, but also practical in ensuring a safe and impartial environment for the negotiations.

On the other hand, if Moscow hosts Zelensky on its territory, this would mark a remarkable development in relations between the two countries.
