US President Donald Trump showed EU leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a painting depicting the moment he was assassinated in Butler, Pennsylvania. "That was not a very good day," Trump said as he pointed to the artwork, which depicts the July 13, 2024 attack.
Michael Thomas Crooks, 20, opened fire with an AR-15 rifle from the roof of a nearby building as Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The bullet only grazed the tip of Trump's ear, leaving him with a minor wound.
The image of the US President raising his fist moments after the attack on Butler became a political symbol that defined his candidacy and played a role in Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the race. The painting depicting the moment hangs prominently in the White House, near the steps leading up to the presidential residence.
By tradition, portraits of recent U.S. presidents are displayed at the entrance to the executive residence, as they are visible to guests during official events.
After the one-on-one meeting, Trump and Zelenskyy joined European leaders for a meeting at the White House, where they posed for a group photo. The meeting was attended by Zelenskyy, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Ruttle, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The multilateral meeting followed Trump's recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
