Russian forces have attacked Ukraine on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the early hours of the morning in Ukraine explosions were heard near major Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kiev.

In an effort to justify the attack, Putin claimed: "A hostile anti-Russia is being created in our historic lands."

"We have made the decision to conduct a special military operation," he said.

Putin further claims that he was for the "demilitarization" of Ukraine, echoing a theme of Kremlin propaganda.

"We do not intend to invade Ukraine," Putin said, referring to other nations.

"Anyone who thinks of intervening from the outside, if he does, will face greater consequences. All relevant decisions have been made. "I hope you listen to me," he said.

While Putin was delivering his speech, the UN Security Council was holding an emergency session, chaired by Russia itself, which holds the rotating presidency.
