At least 161 people are still missing in a single Texas county, four days after devastating floods hit parts of the US state last week, the BBC reports. 109 people have died, 94 of them in the Kerrville area, Governor Greg Abbott said.
Rescue teams from multiple agencies are working together in the rescue effort, including agents from the Border Patrol, the FBI and the National Guard. More than 250 rescuers from multiple agencies have been assigned to the Kerrville area alone. The search is also continuing with Chinook and Black Hawk helicopters.
Most of the fatalities were in Kerr County, where the Guadalupe River burst its banks before dawn Friday. At nearby Camp Mystic, 27 girls were confirmed dead.
A state of emergency has also been declared in New Mexico due to flash flooding. Officials there are already working to rescue people who are trapped. Flooding in the Ruidoso River reached 15 feet (4.5 meters). Officials had to conduct several rapid rescue operations by boat.
