The increase in the number of unemployed is typical for the first month of the year. But in January 2025, Germany recorded the highest number of unemployed people in the last decade.
According to data from the Federal Employment Agency, in January the number of unemployed people in Germany reached around three million people.
The rise in the number of unemployed is typical for the first month of the year, as many seasonal work contracts end after the New Year celebrations and weather-dependent jobs, such as construction, are suspended during the winter. However, the 2025 figure is the highest since January 2015.
Employers blame various developments and anti-corruption measures that have hindered German economic growth.
Data in numbers
Since December 2024, the unemployment rate has increased by 0.4% to 6.4%. This means that in January 2025 the number of unemployed people in Germany is 187,000 higher than in January 2024.
The total number of unemployed people is 2.993 million, the Federal Employment Agency announced.
The highest number of unemployed people last recorded in Germany was in January 2015, with 3.032 million people.
Alarm signal
"The labor market figures are an alarm signal," said the president of the Confederation of German Employers' Associations, Rainer Dulger.
"The economic and structural weakness of the German economy is hitting the labor market with all its might. Time does not wait."
Dulger said that a reduction in bureaucracy, reforms for additional labor costs, and lower energy prices are needed.
"Only then will Germany return to the path of growth and the turnaround in the labor market be successful," Dulger said.
Gloomy news from retail trade
There is also grim news for the German economy. The latest data from the Federal Statistical Office shows that retail sales in December recorded an unexpected decline.
As economists had predicted, in December 2024 sales fell by 1.6% compared to November.
The figures show a 1.7% decline in food sales and a 0.7% decline in non-food retail sales, although overall retail trade revenues rose by 1.8% compared to a year earlier./DW
