David Lebryk, the highest-ranking career official at the US Treasury Department, is expected to leave his post after a clash with allies of billionaire and Donald Trump adviser Elon Musk over access to a sensitive payments system, the Washington Post reported on Friday.
According to the report, which cites three sources familiar with the matter, Lebryk and Musk's representatives clashed over access to a system that administers over $6 trillion in annual payments, including Social Security and Medicare benefits, federal wages, government contract payments and tax refunds.
It remains unclear why the Musk-linked team that President Trump has tasked with government reform requested access to this system.
Neither Treasury Department representatives nor Lebryk himself have commented on the report. There is no date yet for his departure, but according to the *Washington Post*, it will happen soon.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the US Senate confirmed Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary in the Trump administration.
Musk, who has gained significant influence in the Trump administration, has placed associates in several federal agencies and sought to exert more control over government operations. An executive order signed by Trump gives DOGE access to all unclassified federal agency data and systems, including the Treasury’s payment system.
Experts have raised concerns about the implications of the move, noting that the government payments system has never been used for political agendas. Lebryk, who had an excellent reputation among his colleagues, left, praising the work of Treasury staff in a farewell email. / Hashtag
