"Either they say 'Yes', or they will be hit so hard that..."

US President Donald Trump has said that Iran is "very close" to reaching a deal with the US on the war, while Tehran has also signaled that progress has been made over the past week.

However, both sides have been cautious, and Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said the key issue of nuclear weapons would not be part of the initial proposals.

Trump told CBS News that he had seen a draft agreement with Iran. Asked if it was good enough, he replied: “I don’t know, I can’t tell you that.”

The president did not provide further details on the draft, but insisted that any agreement would "absolutely" prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“I will only sign a deal where we get everything we want,” he said. “We will have a deal, or we will have a situation where no country is hit as hard as they are expected to be hit.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told state television on Saturday that the positions of the US and Iran have come closer over the past week, but warned that this does not mean that agreements will be reached on key issues and accused the Americans of "contradictory statements."

"According to our plan, we will first draft a memorandum of understanding, or an agreement in the form of a framework, consisting of 14 points," he said, according to Reuters.

Baqaei added that the process of finalizing the memorandum is ongoing, so that further talks can take place within 30 to 60 days "and ultimately a final agreement can be reached."
