Largest war hostage exchange begins between Ukraine and Russia

Russia and Ukraine today carried out one of the largest exchanges of prisoners of war since the start of the conflict in 2022. This exchange included young people under the age of 25 as well as seriously injured people.

Both sides confirmed the operation, which comes as a result of direct talks held in Istanbul on June 2.

During those talks, an agreement was reached to exchange at least 1,200 prisoners from each side, as well as to repatriate thousands of bodies of soldiers killed in the fighting. This is considered one of the few humanitarian steps on which Moscow and Kiev have found common ground, while broader peace negotiations remain deadlocked.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the launch of the exchange, stressing that the process will take place in several stages over the coming days.

"Today the exchange of prisoners of war has begun. The process is complicated and includes many sensitive details. We are doing everything so that each of them returns home," Zelensky declared via Telegram.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the exchange was carried out with an equal number of soldiers from both sides, without giving exact figures. It was also announced that the returned Russian soldiers are currently in Belarus, where they are receiving medical and psychological assistance before being transferred for further treatment in Russia.

Kremlin adviser Vladimir Medinsky had earlier stated that a list of 640 Russian prisoners of war had been handed over to Ukraine.

The exchange is expected to continue in the coming days, in a process that is seen as a rare sign of cooperation between two countries in conflict.
