Nikki Haley, the first serious Republican to challenge Trump: How likely is she

The former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, launched the campaign for president of the United States on Wednesday. As Voice of America correspondent Steve Herman reports from Washington, Mrs. Haley is the first major Republican to officially challenge former President Donald Trump, during whose administration she served as ambassador to the UN.

At her first rally, part of the presidential campaign, held in the state of South Carolina, Nikki Haley said that the time has come for the country to be led by new faces.

"We are ready! Ready to leave behind stale ideas and faded names of the past. We are more than ready for a new generation to lead us in the future", she said.

That was the closest way to refer to Donald Trump, who is running for president for the third time. But during the speech Ms. Haley did not mention the promise she made in December 2021.

"I will not run if President Trump runs."

In a statement to VOA, through a campaign spokesman, Mr. Trump pointed to Ms. Haley's earlier promise. He also said he told Ms. Haley to follow her heart and do what she wants, wishing her luck.

In a video announcing her candidacy for president, Ms. Haley portrayed herself as someone who would guarantee the party's future.

"Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections. This must change", she said.

John Fortier, one of the main representatives of the American Enterprise Institute, a public policy research institute, says that Mrs. Haley, a daughter of immigrants from India, will not be the strongest opponent of Donald Trump.

"As ambassador to the UN, she was loyal to President Trump and did not break with him, as some in the Republican Party did. I think Republican voters see this as a positive when considering a new candidate. On the negative side, I think that she will not be able to secure as strong support among Americans, or Republican voters, as some other candidates."

Ms. Haley is likely to be the first candidate among those Republicans seeking to block Mr. Trump's return to the White House. The chances are that three people who served during the Trump administration, Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Advisor John Bolton will enter the race.

"The main person in this race, who is seen as a possible alternative to Donald Trump, is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. I think the reasons for this are that he has been portrayed, as a governor of an important state with a Republican leaning, many of the characteristics of Donald Trump," says Mr. Fortier.

Like Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis, he has focused on culture war issues, and he is expected to dominate other Republican candidates in terms of campaign fundraising. That could make him attractive to party loyalists who want a strong candidate to take on the presumptive Democratic nominee, incumbent Joe Biden.

If support for Ms. Haley continues to be in the single digits, she may be seen more as a potential vice presidential candidate.

A large number of candidates running against the former president as well as each other could pave the way for Mr. Trump to repeat what he did in 2016, when he first entered politics, securing enough support to sweep the ground, and secured the official nomination from the Republican Party./ VOA
