Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the start of direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible.
According to him, the decision comes after repeated requests from the Lebanese side to open dialogue. Netanyahu stressed that the talks will focus on disarming Hezbollah and establishing peaceful relations between the two countries.
He added that Israel also appreciates the Lebanese prime minister's recent call for the evacuation of Beirut, at a time of rising tensions in the region.
