Kostas Simitis was 88 years old.
He led Greece from 1996 to 2004 when he succeeded Andreas Papandreou as prime minister.
Simitis became known for his reform plan for the Greek economy. He launched major infrastructure projects in the country and brought Greece into the eurozone, which enabled the country to experience a period of economic stability during a period of major geopolitical change.
Simitis was the prime minister who launched the dogma of the integration of the Balkans into the EU from Thessaloniki in 2000, turning Greece into the main supporter of these countries towards the union for many years.
