Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer (OVP) has resigned after failing to form a coalition government with the SPO, Austrian media reported on Saturday.
"We tried everything up to this point. A deal on the main points is not possible. This makes no sense for a positive future for Austria," Nehammer said at the end of the coalition negotiations.
The People's Party plans to provide information on a further schedule, but according to the krone newspaper, Nehammer's resignation as chancellor is a job done. He is also likely to step down as head of the OVP.
The executive committee of the OVP party is scheduled to meet at 10 am on Sunday at the Federal Chancellory. Karoline Edtstadler, Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer and Sebastian Kurz are being considered as possible alternatives for Nehammer.
