Dick Cheney, America's most powerful modern vice president and the chief architect of the "war on terror" who helped lead the country into the Iraq war, died on Tuesday at the age of 83.
The 46th vice president, who served alongside Republican President George W. Bush for two terms between 2001 and 2009, was for decades a powerful player in Washington.
However, in his later years, Cheney, still a hard-line conservative, was largely ostracized by his party for his harsh criticism of President Donald Trump, whom he called a "coward" and the greatest threat ever to the republic. The former US vice president had long suffered from cardiovascular disease, US media reported.
