Germany expects a reduction in US involvement in Europe in the coming years, so it sees the increase in security and defense capacity as necessary.

The German Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, in an interview with Welt am Sonntag, says that in the face of the threat posed by Russia, Europe must prepare to succeed on its own.

Pistorius has stated that Europe needs to rearm so it can better defend itself as new military threats could emerge by the end of this decade.

"Regardless of who becomes the next president of the USA... there will be a reduction, hopefully only moderate, in American involvement in Europe. This means that we Europeans must increase our commitment to guarantee security on our continent", he said.

Pistorious said the US military is expected to increasingly turn its attention to the Pacific region in the next decade, meaning less focus on Europe.

Pistorius warns that the fact that Russia has increased the production of weapons to support its operations in Ukraine is a real threat to Europe, especially to the Baltic states, Georgia and Moldova. "It's not a joke. We can face the risks at the end of this decade," he said.

Europe is clear that it may also have to match US aid to Ukraine if Washington fails to agree on new funding.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned earlier this week that Russian President Vladimir Putin will go to war elsewhere after Ukraine.

"If Putin wins in Ukraine, there is a real risk that his aggression will not end here," Stoltenberg told reporters during a meeting this week. "Our support is not charity. It is an investment in our security."

But according to Pistorius, if necessary, Europe needs 5-8 years for its industry to increase its production capacity.

According to him, the new power in Poland will enable Berlin, Paris and Warsaw to increase their military cooperation. Pistorius has said that it is not foreseen that the German army will repeat the missions like those it had in Afghanistan or Mali. The German mission in Afghanistan was the first for this country since the end of the Second World War.
