Over 1,700 dead in Myanmar, WHO appeals for $8 million in aid

The WHO has made an urgent appeal for $8 million in aid for the people of Myanmar, who were hit by a devastating earthquake on March 28.

Nearly 72 hours after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake, local authorities have confirmed 1,700 dead and hundreds more missing, BBC reports.

The United Nations agency has activated the "highest level of emergency" and stressed that donations are needed to provide urgent trauma care, prevent disease outbreaks and restore essential health services over the next 30 days.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) also appealed for humanitarian aid.

"This is not just a disaster, it is a complex humanitarian crisis layered on top of existing vulnerabilities. This earthquake exacerbates an already fragile situation. The global community must support a bold and sustained response," said IFRC Asia-Pacific Director Alexander Matheou.

The disaster is a further blow to Myanmar, which has been engulfed in civil war since a military coup in 2021. Immediately after Friday's earthquake, the junta reportedly resumed airstrikes.

The earthquake was felt hundreds of kilometers away in neighboring countries such as Thailand, where the death toll has risen to 18. In Bangkok, rescue efforts continue for 76 construction workers trapped under a collapsed multi-story building.
