Torn apart by civil war, and now by a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake, Myanmar is counting the dead.

Over 1644 is the preliminary balance of lives lost from the powerful earthquakes so far, but the fear is that the real figure could reach thousands.

So far, 3,408 injured and 139 missing people have been reported.

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has been wracked by unrest that has not subsided since the military seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1, 2021, sparking widespread popular opposition. After peaceful demonstrations were violently suppressed, many opponents of the military junta took up arms, and large parts of the country are now engulfed in conflict. Before the earthquake struck, the United Nations estimated that hundreds of thousands of civilians had been displaced by internal fighting, and about 18.6 million were in need of humanitarian assistance. Military leaders have now issued a rare appeal for international help, which was first responded to by China and India. In the second largest city, Mandalay, where the earthquake's epicenter was located, rescue workers are struggling to save people trapped under the rubble, but they are not having it easy.

"There are 7 people under the rubble, who have been trying to get out all night, but we need large machinery. They are calling out, we hear their voices, but we don't know where they are. Only thanks to large machinery can the piles of rubble be moved so that we can get people out alive from there," says a rescue worker.

Emergency response teams told the BBC they were digging by hand to rescue survivors. Special sound equipment has helped in many cases to locate them, but extracting them from the rubble is no easy task. Despite continued efforts, unstable structures and large piles of debris have significantly slowed down operations. Neighboring Thailand is also experiencing the consequences of the disaster. At the site of the collapse of a skyscraper under construction, images of which went around the world, at least 15 people were found still alive under a layer of rubble of 5 to 10 meters. 6 are the confirmed dead there, while 100 construction workers are missing.

According to the Helmholtz Center for Geosciences in Germany and the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake on Friday had a magnitude of 7.7. A second quake twelve minutes later was said to have a magnitude of 6.4. The epicenter of the earthquake was about ten kilometers deep. The tremors were also felt in parts of China, India and Bangladesh. In China, Yunnan province, which borders Myanmar, was particularly affected, Chinese state television reported.
