Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen - one of the world's longest-serving leaders - has announced that he will step down from his post and hand over the position to his son in the coming weeks.

The announcement, which the British public broadcaster BBC described as "anticipated", came three days after his party won the election again.

Hun Sen, 70, has become increasingly authoritarian after nearly four decades in power, analysts say.

He had announced that he would begin a transition in 2021, but until Wednesday, no one knew when that would happen.

His eldest son, Hun Manet, has long been preparing for this role and was until recently the commander of the Royal Cambodian Army.

On Wednesday, Hun Sen said his son will be named the country's prime minister on August 10.

"I want to ask for understanding from the people as I will not continue as prime minister", he said in a special broadcast on state television.

He said he would step down as his tenure could cause instability. However, he will retain the leadership of the ruling Cambodian People's Party. Political analysts say that through this position, he will continue to retain ultimate control.

Earlier on Wednesday, Hun Sen was seen visiting the Cambodian monarch's palace to inform him of his decision. Cambodian state media broadcast footage of the meeting.

Hun Manet, 45, took a leading role in the campaign for this year's July 23 election and was often seen at important rallies alongside his father, who has led the Southeast Asian country of 16 million people since 1985.

Sunday's election was widely seen as uncompetitive because the only credible opposition party was disqualified from voting.

There were 17 other parties on the ballot, but they were all too small, new or connected to the ruling party, so they were not considered a real alternative for voters. \Rel\
