Who is the American judge who sentenced KLA leaders to 81 years in prison?

Charles L. Smith III is the American judge who presided over the trial panel in the case against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selim, and Jakup Krasniqi and read the verdict pronounced by the Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

Smith, an American citizen, was appointed a judge in the Specialist Chambers on February 7, 2017. In addition to leading the panel in the case against former KLA leaders, he has also been the Vice President of this court since April 29, 2020.

His career in Kosovo began years before the creation of the Specialist Chambers. From 2010 to 2013, he served as a judge for the European Union Rule of Law Mission - EULEX.

Within this mandate, Smith was a member of the Supreme Court of Kosovo from 2011 to 2013. During this period, he was elected first Vice-President, and then President of the Assembly of EULEX Judges, according to his biography, displayed on the Specialist Chambers website.

Before his engagement in Kosovo, he had a long career in the American justice system. In 1990, he was appointed a District Court judge for the Fourth Judicial District of Iowa. From 1996 to 2010, Smith served as the district's chief judge and was also a member of the Iowa Judicial Council.

Before his appointment as a judge, he practiced as a private lawyer from 1970 to 1989. His practice included civil and criminal matters, as well as cases related to business, taxation, and inheritance.

Smith completed his law studies at Creighton University in the United States, where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1970. That same year, he was admitted to the Nebraska Bar Association, and in 1971 to the Iowa Bar Association, which is one of the friendliest American states with Kosovo.

Since 2014, he has also worked as a mediator and arbitrator.

At the Specialist Chambers, Smith also presided over the trial of former OVL-UCK leaders Hysni Gucati and Nasim Haradinaj. In addition to his duties as Deputy President of the Court, he also serves as Senior Staff Complaints Judge.
