The sentences handed down by the Specialist Chambers in The Hague to Hashim Thaçi and three other former KLA leaders, totaling 81 years in prison, once again demonstrated the severity of the first instance of international justice.

History has shown that the appeals process can completely overturn a decision, as in the case of Ante Gotovina, the general who led the Croatian Army against Belgrade-backed Serbian troops and self-proclaimed Serbian rebel forces in the Krajina region.

His military operation "Storm" in 1995 ended the war and restored Croatia's sovereignty.

After four years on the run, Gotovina was captured in Spain in 2005. In 2011, the Hague Tribunal sentenced him in the first instance to 24 years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Official Zagreb even engaged prestigious international offices such as the American Patton Boggs.

The Appeals Chamber dismissed all charges of unlawful bombing and declared Gotovina completely innocent, ordering his immediate release.
