Daniel Serwer, a university professor in the United States of America and observer of developments in the Western Balkans, has stated that Americans and Europeans should feel ashamed for criminalizing the Kosovo Liberation Army.
"They have criminalized a liberation movement they supported and reduced international justice to political revenge. This is another lesson in why you shouldn't be too friendly with Washington and Brussels. It's not just the verdict that is unjust. It's the court itself," Serwer wrote.
The so-called Special Court on Wednesday found four former KLA leaders – Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi – guilty of four counts of war crimes, while acquitting them of charges of crimes against humanity.
Thaçi and Krasniqi were each sentenced to 25 years in prison for war crimes, Veseli to 18 years, and Selimi to 13 years.
The case is expected to be appealed to the Appeals Panel.
