Saudi Arabia warns of 'red line' of holy sites after Houthi drone

Saudi Arabia has warned that the security of Mecca and Islam's holy sites constitutes a "red line" after Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Houthi rebels south of the holy city.

The spokesman for the Saudi-led military coalition, Turki al-Malki, said the drone was shot down before it entered the restricted airspace over Mecca.

"The security of Islam's two holiest sites and pilgrims is a red line," al-Malki declared, adding that the coalition will take the necessary preventive measures against the Houthis.

Mecca is Islam's holiest city and the main destination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, where millions of Muslims travel each year.

Saudi Arabia considered the incident to be the second attempt by the Houthis to strike Mecca. According to the Saudi coalition, another such incident occurred in 2017, when a ballistic missile was launched towards the area.

But the Houthis have denied targeting Mecca. The group's spokesman, Hazem al-Assad, called the claim an "old lie" and dismissed accusations of an attack on the holy city.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which represents 57 Muslim-majority countries, condemned what it called an attack on the holy city and expressed support for Saudi Arabia.

The incident came at a time of heightened tensions in the region. Saudi Arabia had earlier issued security alerts in several areas of the country, including Mecca, after a series of attacks carried out by forces linked to Iran.

The US embassy in Saudi Arabia also issued an advisory for American citizens to reconsider travel to the country, warning of the risk of drone and missile attacks, armed conflict and terrorism.

The Houthis have taken control of parts of Yemen's Red Sea coast, near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world's most important maritime corridors. The group has also announced several attacks on Saudi Arabia in the past week, including an attack on an air base, which it has presented as retaliation for Saudi airstrikes in Yemen.
