North Korea claims to have successfully tested a missile with a nuclear warhead

North Korea has "successfully" conducted an important test for the development of missiles capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads, state news agency KCNA reported on Thursday.

However, this claim of hers has been described by South Korea as a "fraud" to cover up the failure to launch a missile days before.

North Korea said the test was conducted on Wednesday using the solid-fuel initial engine of an intermediate-range ballistic missile.

A day earlier, South Korea said the North had fired a hypersonic missile into the air shortly after it was launched from its eastern coast.

KCNA said the missile successfully delivered nuclear warheads, which were accurately fired at three targets, during a test aimed at developing a multiple nuclear warhead (MIRV) missile.

"The goal was to provide weapons to destroy individual targets using multiple nuclear warheads," she said.

The South Korean military said in a joint analysis with the US military that this was a hoax by the North to cover up the failure of a missile launched a day earlier.

"Today North Korea revealed something, but I believe it is just a tool of deception and exaggeration," said Lee Sung-joon, spokesman for South Korea's General Staff.

South Korea, the United States and Japan condemned Wednesday's missile test, saying it violated UN Security Council resolutions.

On Thursday, these three countries launched major military exercises together, with the aim of strengthening defenses against air and sea attacks./REL
