Members of Turkey's Directorate of Religious Affairs joined the operations to provide aid to the areas most affected by the earthquakes in Kahramanmaras.
During their fieldwork among the collapsed buildings, officials discovered hundreds of religious books scattered around, some damaged and some still intact, which they collected.
"We are collecting the books to show that the Koran should not be on the ground, but should be kept in our hearts," Abdulhekim Karael told the Reuters news agency.
"We hope to redistribute those that are still usable to our citizens," said religious official and local mufti Bedri Sinan Yazici.
