Joschka Fischer: It's like 1914. We are one step away from world war

For former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, well versed in the Middle East, the conflict in Gaza has the potential to plunge the entire region into war.

"It's hard not to think about the year 1914, when events took an uncontrollable dynamic and resulted in the First World War," he says.

The military operation that Russia launched in February of last year in Ukraine was, according to Fischer, the first domino to fall and that "is finally putting the post-1945 American peace into crisis," causing a "new geopolitical polarization in which no one will gain the upper hand".

According to Fischer, there is "a striking parallel" between the war in Ukraine and what is going on in Gaza: "Both have at their core an existential struggle for the survival of a nation state."

The former vice chancellor is convinced that Iran has played a crucial leading and supporting role in Hamas's brutal attack and that Israel "has no choice but to respond militarily", even if it means civilian lives being lost and further deepening of the hatred between the two sides. This, Fischer claims, was precisely "the outcome hoped for by those who planned and carried out the terrorist attack of October 7."

Fischer says the two active conflicts the world currently has have outlined a new world order, where the West is aligned with Kiev and Tel Aviv, while powers like China and Russia, as well as almost the entire so-called Global South, are on the opposite front. . "It's a dynamic that the West simply cannot accept," warns Fischer, who says "titanic diplomatic efforts will be needed to stop it."

The globe is also "boiling" from other hotbeds of conflict, from the Caucasus between Azerbaijan and Armenia, to the Balkans between Serbia and Kosovo, to Africa in the Sahel, where a series of military states and the strategic withdrawal of France have plunged the area into total chaos.

"The risk of a military clash in the China Sea and Taiwan Strait is increasing. In it, the American and Chinese superpowers would end up being directly involved.

Efforts to change the balance of global power and establish a new international order have never occurred without violence. This makes the tone of the great powers towards each other more aggressive and all the more disturbing".

What we see today is according to Fisher only "a remnant of a world without order".
