The number of casualties in Gaza continues to rise, while Israel has intensified attacks against Hamas. Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry says more than 9,000 people have been killed since the war began.

Because of security concerns, there are very few journalists in Gaza to document the human cost of the fighting.

But BBC News has contacted several families and eyewitnesses who have told stories of people who have been killed in recent days.

Yusof Abu Musa

Electricity supply for Yusof and his brother and sister was not a problem as their father had installed solar panels at home so they could watch their favorite cartoons.

They were sitting in front of the television on October 15 when their home was hit by an Israeli airstrike that killed 7-year-old Yusof after the roof of their home collapsed. His sister and brother escaped with some injuries.

His father, Mohamed, was working a 24-hour shift as a doctor at the hospital when his wife, Rawan, came in, screaming for their youngest son, but only search and rescue teams were able to get him out. that from the ruins.

"The last time I saw Yusof alive was when he ran to hug me on the doorstep of our house, just before I left for work. He kissed me goodbye after I gave him some cookies and bananas. He wanted to be a doctor, maybe because he always saw me going to the hospital for work," Mohamed recalls.

Dr. Midhat Saidam

On the evening of October 15, Dr Saidam needed a break. The 47-year-old surgeon had not left al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City for more than a week. He informed his colleagues that he needed to go home. Unfortunately, a few hours after he arrived at his apartment, he was killed as a result of an Israeli attack.

"This calm, funny and kind-hearted man returned to the hospital the next morning, but lifeless," explained his colleague, Adnan Albursh.

The doctor, who had known the surgeon for more than 20 years, added that his late colleague was very dedicated to his work.

“If any of the doctors faced any difficulty, they knew that Dr Saidam was the one to solve it. His death is a great loss not only for this hospital, but also for the medical profession," said Dr. Ahmed El Mokhallalati, head of the plastic surgery department at al-Shifa Hospital.

Lurin Azzam Abuhalima

In the last communication she had with her fiance, Khaled al-Masry, Lurin said she was tired and exhausted from moving from one country to another in search of safety from the war. The 30-year-old had just arrived at Nusairat refugee camp, in the center of the Gaza Strip, to stay with her aunt.

Lurin had survived two attacks, including one on October 16 that leveled the building where she lived with her parents in Gaza City.

"She told me she was going to take a shower, pray and rest," her fiancé recalled.

According to Khaled, who lives and works in Cyprus, his fiancee was praying in a room when the house she was in was hit by the attacks.

"She was killed while she was praying," he says.

Lurin and Khaled had postponed the wedding twice due to the unstable situation in Gaza, but recently, the couple had planned to get married in December and move to live in Cyprus.

"She is resting forever. She should have worn a white dress, but now she is wearing a white shroud", says her fiance amid great pain for the loss of his girlfriend.
