The average price of gasoline in the US has crossed the $1.06 per liter mark for the first time in nearly four years, as the war with Iran continues to push up energy prices.

According to the American organization AAA, the national average price for regular gasoline has reached $4.02 per gallon, or about $1.06 per liter, more than $0.26 per liter higher than at the start of the war. The price of diesel fuel has also increased significantly, by about $0.45 per liter.

One of the main reasons is the virtual blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for transporting energy from the Middle East, over the past month. As a result, the production and movement of oil and gas in the region has slowed or stopped, sharply increasing the price of crude oil, the base material for gasoline and diesel.

Before the conflict began on February 28, gasoline in the U.S. averaged about $0.79 per liter. Diesel was about $0.99 per liter. Now the average price of diesel has risen to $1.44 per liter.

In addition to the increase in crude oil prices, AAA points out that another factor that has influenced the last week is the high demand for fuel during the spring break season.

The price of $1.06 per liter is the highest level since August 2022. As a national average, this means that in some American states, drivers have been paying even more for some time.

However, current prices still remain below the historic records set in June 2022, after the start of the war in Ukraine, when gasoline reached around $1.32 per liter and diesel around $1.54 per liter.

In the UK, the average price of petrol has increased by 14%, while that of diesel by 27% since the start of the war.

Several countries, such as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, have already imposed restrictions on fuel supplies, while last week Slovenia became the first European Union country to take such a measure.

In Australia, the government has halved fuel sales tax for three months to help drivers, while two states have temporarily offered free public transport to encourage citizens to use cars less. (BBC)
