The Israeli military said Thursday it was investigating the possibility that it had killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar after an operation in the Gaza Strip that it said had targeted three militants.

"At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed," said a statement.

He said there were no signs that Israeli hostages had been present in the building where the three militants were killed.

Hamas has not yet reacted to this development.

If confirmed, Sinar's death would represent a major boost for the Israeli military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after a string of high-profile assassinations of his enemies' leaders in recent months.

Israel's Army Radio said the incident occurred during a ground operation targeting the town of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, during which Israeli troops killed three militants and captured their bodies.
