Nightclub horror, 17 dead and dozens injured

At least 17 people have been found dead inside a nightclub in the East London city of South Africa, local media report.

The bodies were found at the Enyobeni tavern early Sunday and several others are said to have been injured.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation as we speak," a police spokesman told local media.

Relatives of the victims have not been able to see their bodies, reports say, and locals have called for the site to be closed.

Most of those found dead were young people aged between 18 and 20. Eyewitnesses told the Daily Dispatch newspaper that the bodies were lying inside the environment as if they had fallen to the floor.

There are reports that the deaths were caused by stabbings, while others speak of alcohol poisoning.
