Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday proposed the imposition of the death penalty on those responsible for lighting forest fires.
"What should be the punishment?" The death penalty? "I think they (the arsonists) should be sentenced to death," Erdogan told reporters gathered at the Marmaris fire-affected resort in the southwestern province of Mugla.
Turkey abolished the death penalty in 2002, so before Erdogan can make a final decision, he must first be voted on by parliament.

The Marmaris fire, which broke out on Tuesday, burned 4,000 acres and 435 people were evacuated.
On Friday, a court in Marmaris sent to prison a man who "admitted" that he started the fire in anger due to a family quarrel, reports the state news agency Anatolia.
Another person was arrested on Friday on suspicion of setting fire to the Mediterranean resort of Antalya, 500 kilometers northeast of Marmaris, Anatolia reports.

"The death penalty would be a good way to 'curb' and should be taken seriously," Erdogan added, without specifying whether he intended only arson or other actions that could cause a fire.
Last summer, numerous fires destroyed thousands of hectares of forest area across Turkey.
Many fear the spread of the first major fire in Marmaris this year to other parts of Turkey.
