The situation with the fires in the tourist areas of Turkey continues to be problematic for three days. Just like a year ago, a giant fire continues to cause damage and panic to holidaymakers and residents in the Marmaris coastal area.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid a visit to the areas affected by the blaze, where firefighters are working day and night, and threatened that those who intentionally started fires would be sentenced to death.

Authorities have said a suspect arrested in connection with the fire has admitted to causing it. The fire, in a forest near the Marmaris resort, has been brought under control, authorities said on Saturday.

After visiting the scene on Friday, Erdogan said the sentence for burning forests should be "intimidating, and it is a death sentence."

The country’s first major summer fire started on Tuesday and evoked memories of last year’s fires that destroyed 140,000 hectares of villages, the worst in history.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said Thursday that the arrested suspect had admitted to burning the forest out of frustration due to family issues.

Local officials told Reuters in recent days that authorities lacked the equipment and personnel needed for another fiery summer.
