Hashim Thaçi's defense team begins its closing arguments today at the Hague Special Court.

On the third day of the final phase of the largest trial in The Hague, Thaçi's lawyer, Luka Misetic, will begin presenting his closing statement at 9 am.

On the second day, February 10, the Specialized Prosecution concluded its speech, claiming that Hashim Thaçi had lied to the internationals several times and adding that the defense's statements should be taken with reservations regarding the KLA and the role of its former leaders.

The SPS has said it has received, as it claims, over five thousand pieces of material evidence and interviewed over 130 witnesses. Chief Specialist Prosecutor Kimberly West has requested a prison sentence of 45 years for the KLA four, which amounts to a total of 180 years in prison.

After the Prosecution, the victims' advocate had the closing argument. Simon Laws cited witness statements regarding the damage allegedly suffered by the victims.

He said the victims were mistreated and some of them suffer the psychological consequences to this day. According to him, members of the KLA committed crimes, but that “does not make it a criminal organization.” He said he expects the voices of the participating victims to be heard in the trial panel’s decision in this case.

The prosecution, the victims' lawyer, the defense teams and the former KLA leaders, during this and next week, have the opportunity to address the trial panel for the last time with their submissions in this process.

After the closing arguments, the case will be sent to the panel of judges. The judges have three months to reach a decision on the case, or to request an extension of the deadline for reaching a decision.

Meanwhile, the Kosovo Assembly has postponed its plenary session due to the trial in The Hague. The session scheduled to be held at 12:00 has been postponed to 17:00 as the defense will have the floor throughout the day.

The former KLA leaders are facing charges brought by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office, which they have described as unfounded. The defense has also rejected these charges and argued that the KLA did not have an organized command structure.

Former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi have been in custody in The Hague since November 2020. The trial has started on April 3, 2023.
