US President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, the bridge connecting the Canadian province of Ontario with the US state of Michigan, until the United States is "fully compensated for everything it has given to Canada."

Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social that Canada should treat the US with fairness and respect and stressed that the United States should own at least half of the bridge.

He also claimed that Canada owns both sides of the bridge, a charge that Canadian authorities deny.

According to the project's official website, the bridge is being funded by the Canadian government, but will be shared public property of Canada and Michigan.

Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin has warned that blocking the bridge would be catastrophic for the state's economy, increasing costs for businesses, threatening supply chains and putting jobs at risk.

Construction of the bridge, which began in 2018, is a project that has taken more than a decade to complete and is estimated to have cost 6.4 billion Canadian dollars. The bridge is expected to open to traffic after completion of tests and official approvals.

Trump also blamed former President Barack Obama for facilitating construction without using American steel, a claim that Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens called “crazy.” He also cited trade disputes between the U.S. and Canada and expressed concern about Canada’s new trade deal with China.

However, Michigan's Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, and Senator Slotkin have emphasized the importance of the bridge for improving the economy and international cooperation, adding that they will work to get the project back on track.
