Germany is among the countries with the highest taxes compared to other industrialized countries in the world.

Germany ranks second among industrialized countries, where people have to pay among the highest taxes and duties. This is the result of a comparative study undertaken by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

"According to an international comparison, low and middle incomes in Germany are subject to relatively high taxes and duties," the head of the OECD branch in Berlin, Nicola Brandt, told the Reuters news agency.

According to Brandt, this is mainly due to the fact that social security systems are mainly financed by social security contributions. However, relatively high taxes are somewhat offset by direct benefits such as pension rights, health insurance and unemployment insurance.

According to Brandtt, such insurance does not exist in all OECD countries, reports DW.
