France called on Kosovo on Friday to resusctate itself from taking any "unilateral action" that could further escalate tensions in the north of the country, following its intentions to reopen the bridge over Ibar.

France's response comes after Kosovo authorities took several actions this week in the north of the country, inhabited by Serbs, which have been opposed by Serbia and Kosovo Serbs, as well as by the international community.

"France strongly condemns the sudden increase in unilateral actions of The Kosovar authorities in the north of the country, which affect the daily life of the Serb community," the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

On Thursday, Kosovo authorities conducted urban inspections on the Ibar River in a testing phase before its intended reopening, while earlier this week they closed nine facilities of Serbia Post in northern Kosovo.

The Kosovo government has said it intends to reopen the bridge over Ibar, which divides The Albanian-majority South Mitrovica and the Serb-majority North.

Members of the Serbian community protested wednesday against the reopening of the bridge over Ibar.

The QUINT countries – which France and the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Italy – on August 2 said they did not support the opening of the bridge at the moment.

According to France, the actions of the Kosovo authorities jeopardize efforts to normalize Kosovo's relations with Serbia, "which is a prerequisite for the realization of european perspectives for both countries."

Meanwhile, NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, again warned that it is ready to take "all necessary measures" to combat developments that could undermine regional security and stability, following recent developments in northern Kosovo.

In the postwar period, the bridge over the Ibar River was a symbol of the riots and barricades erected by Kosovo Serbs to counter Kosovo's attempts to establish authority in the north.

The bridge is currently open only to pedestrians, although within the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia it has been agreed to open for vehicle traffic as well.

Italian KFOR soldiers are on the bridge over the Ibar River, while members of the Kosovo Police are nearby.

KFOR said Friday that "we do not want to speculate on any scenarios in the future" if Kosovo institutions ask it to remove its presence from the bridge over the Ibar River.
