Europe draws up plan for Hormuz without US

European countries are drawing up a plan for a post-war international mission aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, without the involvement of the United States, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the report, the initiative is being led by the United Kingdom and France and envisions the creation of a broad international coalition that will help secure the passage of commercial ships through this strategic sea route after the end of the current conflict.

French President Emmanuel Macron declared that it is an international defense mission that will not include "warring parties," thus excluding the United States, Israel, and Iran.

European diplomats quoted by the Wall Street Journal said that European ships will not operate under American command.

The aim of the plan is to give shipping companies the security to resume using the strait once hostilities cease, while the operation is expected to include naval mine-clearing assets, military escort and continuous surveillance in the area.

The report notes that Germany could also join the mission, which would make the operation broader than initially envisaged. Berlin is expected to express its position in the coming days.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the discussions also highlight growing tensions between Europe and the United States, at a time when the US administration has been demanding for weeks that European allies send warships to the Persian Gulf to help forcefully reopen the strait.
